The Commemoration Puzzle

August 2001 - Few cars, bright lights, dark sky, its late night lower Manhattan, and I am riding in my aunts ramshackle vehicle, with my parents and grandma. After a final day of sightseeing in New York, my aunts were making sure we had got our NYC fill before heading home to California. I still remember craning my neck out the car window, unable to see the tops of those gigantic buildings, my grandmas body pushed up against mine, as three generations of Katzer females shared the tiny backseat of my aunt's old sedan. The two towering buildings overwhelmed the night sky and my aunt asked if we wanted to go up. Exhausted and hungry, I replied with that certain confidence that can only be found in an innocent 10-year-old only child, "No..We can go up next time."

I Love NY (Grocery Stores)

I am what the average person would call thrifty, my friends call cheap and my grandfather calls Bohemian. This obsession, and its resulting coupon clipping and price scourging come at great conflict with one of my other family passed on traits, a love for food. Blame my six + feet of length, but my consumption patterns and taste bud desires challenge my commitment to the dollar bill.

NYU Student Arrested at Health Care Rally

While most students were in class or taking midterms Wednesday morning, Gallatin senior Sarah Secunda was being arrested for protesting for a single-payer health care system.

The sit-in, held at the corporate offices of WellPoint, a private health insurance provider in Lower Manhattan, drew about 80 activists, nine of whom were arrested. The protest was one of about a dozen similar demonstrations nationwide. They were part of the Mobilization for Health Care for All campaign, which uses civil disobedience to push for a single-payer universal health care plan.

Media Moguls Debate the Current State of News

Last night, six top-notch media professionals posed a question: "Should we eliminate mainstream media?"

By the end of the night, 68 percent of their audience answered, "No."

The debate, titled "Good Riddance to Mainstream Media," pitted three pro-mainstream media panelists against three pro-new media panelists to settle the question of how new and old media interact with each other.
